Does the idea of painting a door frighten you. The last time you attempted to paint a door did it end up patchy with paint runs. If so, you need to follow the instructions I give you. This will leave you with a perfectly finished painted door. Nothing in life is hard if you know how to do it. Painting a door is no different.We will follow with instructions to paint a panelled door.Gather together the tools you will need. A screwdriver to remove the door furniture. Paint, 2″ paint brush. 3″ roller and tray, cloth, turps or white spirits, sandpaper. small hand brush, floor covering, door stop.Lay the floor covering under the door so both sides of the floor are protected. chock the door open with a door stop so it remains stable while you paint. ~Remove the door furniture. Take the sandpaper and smooth over the surface of the door removing any old drip marks, brush hairs, etc. until the door has a smooth finish. Brush over lightly to remove sanding residue.Load the roller tray with undercoat but only to half way. Work the roller in the paint and roll out on the tray. The object is to use as least paint as possible. Many people make the mistake of loading up brushes and rollers which then results in patchiness and/or paint runs.Take the tin of undercoat and the 2″ paint brush. Dip the brush into the paint but no further than halfway up the brush. You must now gently wipe the excess paint from the brush onto the side of the tin. Use the same side of the tin all the time. Apply the paint to the routed parts of the door covering as much area as possible with the paint on the brush. Pay attention to the corners by dabbing the edge of the brush into them and brushing out. Leave all the flat areas of the door. These will be rolled when you have filled in the routed areas.Once the routed areas are neatly covered, with the minimum of paint, it is time to undercoat the flat areas. Take the roller and dip into the paint then roll out all of the excess onto the tray.. Paint the panels by following the direction of the grain which is usually top to bottom apart from the top centre, middle centre, and bottom centre. The sides are top to bottom. Use the brush to paint the bottom couple of inches of the door and the area around any hinges. Do not paint the hinges. Roll down the side of the door.Once the door is painted return to it every 15mins or so to brush out any runs. Strictly speaking, if you have applied the paint finely enough then you wont have any trouble with runs.Leave to dry for 24hrs at least.Apply the second coat using gloss or satin paint. Follow the same routine as you did with the undercoat, keeping the brush and roller thinly covered in paint. You should now have a painted door you can be proud of and which cost you only your own labour time.When the second coat of paint is dry, replace the door furniture.
